create (with kids): Hammering Away

We finally have a bit of snow to enjoy, but the freezing temperatures have kept us mostly indoors. With two active kids, our little house can seem smaller and smaller somedays. With a box, a hammer and some nails, we've been able to beat cabin fever... at least for a little while.

For this activity we used a large, sturdy cardboard box. I poked little pilot holes with the nails in the cardboard first. Then Isia put a nail in each hole and hammered it through. It took her quite a few tries at the beginning, but she really had the hang of it by the end. Good preparation for working in the wood studio with her Mama someday!

ps. Since I was right with her, and we were hammering into a soft material, I didn't have her wear goggles. But I will be changing that in the future. Mishaps can happen too easily, and- just as importantly- it's a good habit to form. It'll be easier to get her to wear goggles as a teen-ager if she's been wearing them along (smile).
